Choose Tools Cache Purge Central Cache.OK. Now, I can open the.CR2 Raw files in Adobe Photoshop CS3. Almost every forum i've looked on, has had the same stuff. Here's something that I used, and it worked!

I've been working on the same problem for a few days (using CS2).go here. And select the the OS youre running on the rightthe link provided below is an explination/directions for the fix.

It's called Adobe DNG converter. Different brands of cameras hold a different RAW format. The DNG converter will convert all RAW files to Adobe's Default RAW format (.dng).When I used this, I went from 15 MB files to 26 MB. It's larger, but the link above will explain why, it works!-Val.

I did a search and came up with a couple of solutions, but they did not allow RAW files from my Nikon D300 to open in CS3. TIFF and JPEG open fine.

I have Windows 7 Home Premium. I had CS3 on a Windows XP Home Edition computer before.-I tried changing compatibility in Windows 7 to my old system-XP Service Pack 2 & 3 but it didn't help.-Others say I need to upgrade to CS5??? I'm sure if I call Adobe that is what they will tell me.A few people say it works fine for them???????????Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance. Install the 4.6 version of the Camera Raw.8bi plugin (it's the last version compatible with CS3).

Anything 4.3.1 or higher supports the D300. Get 4.6 here:Note that with a 64 Bit version of Windows, the instructions on that page for the folder it needs to be in may not be correct. After you unzip it, you'll want to copy the Camera Raw.8bi plugin to this folder. Note the (x86) part, where 64 Bit Windows installs 32 bit programs like CS3:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAdobePlug-InsCS3File Formats. Rdhphoto1wrote:I will try that update for CS3 and see if that helps.

I'm not a real computer whiz at unzipping, and copying files but will give it a whirl if I need to.Windows 7 has basic support for.zip files built in. Basically, if you look at your downloads folder using Windows Explorer (StartComputer icon, click on your C drive and go to your Downloads Folder), you can 'right click' on the Camera Raw download from Adobe and use the 'Extract All' choice and it will unzip it in place. Then, just right click on the extracted Camera Raw.8bi file (that's the plugin you need) and select Copy. Then, just use Windows Explorer to navigate to the correct folder for your plugins. This should be it if you're using 64 Bit Win 7:Program Files (x86)Common FilesAdobePlug-InsCS3File FormatsThen, right click in an open area and select Paste and it should copy the file there for you.You may also be able to 'double click' on the download from Adobe and see it's contents that way. Then, right click on the Camera Raw.8bi file and select Copy, navigate to the correct folder for the Adobe plugins using Windows Explorer, find an open area, right click on it and select Paste.I'm not running Windows right this second so I can't try that for you right now. But, Win 7 should be able to unzip the download for you without needing any other software to do it (WinZip, etc.), as I know it's got an Extract All feature built in if you right click on a.zip file where it can extract the contents of it to your current folder. Then, you should be able to use Windows Explorer to Copy and Paste the extracted Camera Raw.8bi plugin where you need it (or 'drag and drop:' it to the correct folder instead). I see in the instructions that I can use WinZip to do it, but would rather not have to buy anytning, if possible. There might be a FREE trial of WinZip but didn't see it.Copy to correct folder might be a problem for me also. Like I said, I am not a real computer guy. Thanks for any help on this.

Rdhphoto1wrote:Photoshop CS3 is now up and running on my Windows 7, 64bit machine. Thanks to the great folks here on PC Talk.Jim, I needed instructions like yours that are easy to follow. I did drag the new RAW 4.6 and the old RAW 4.0 to the dsktop, and then swapped them out in theFile Format folder.by drag & drop. Worked like a charm!!Good.

When reading your reply earlier about seeing a folder for it after using extract all, I wasn't sure if you knew you needed to click on the folder to see the contents (the extracted Camera Raw.8bi plugin) so you could copy and paste it (or drag and drop it) to the correct folder that Adobe is using for plugins. But, it sounds like you figured it out and have the new Camera Raw.8bi plugin file copied to the right folder if your copy of CS3 is opening.nef files OK now.The 4.6 version of Camera Raw is the last one offered by Adobe for CS3. So, if you buy a new camera, you may need to upgrade to a newer version of you want to continue using it (as newer models are not going to be supported by Camera Raw under CS3 anymore).

Of course, to make matters worse, Adobe is planning on charging full price for new versions if you try to upgrade and you're not already on the previous version. I think they're probably shooting themselves in the foot with that kind of upgrade policy and many users will just use different products instead.Time will tell. But, I'm hoping that users will investigate alternative products and other more reasonably priced products will increase in popularity (with more developers working on them as their user base increases), as Adobe is just getting to be a bit too greedy from my perspective and more competition would be good for the industry. There is another alternative if you do get a new camera and prefer not to buy the latest version of Photoshop.

You can use the free Adobe DNG converter instead. Then, you convert your NEF files to DNG files with it, and CS3 would be able to open the DNG files. But, it sounds like you do most RAW conversion using other tools anyway (NX2, etc.).

What luck! Thanks for all your help Jim.

Yes, I did know that Adobe made the upgrade change so we will need to upgrade every year. Like you said.I will be looking at other programs for my image editing. I will keep that DNG tip in mind.I do appreciate your help.
